May 28, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Peoria, IL - The Burlington Bees (15-32) left ten men on base, including five in the last two innings, and lost 6-3 to the Peoria Chiefs (27-19) tonight at O'Brien Field. With the win, the Chiefs win the series three games to one and the Bees drop to a season-low 17 games under .500.

The Chiefs got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Daric Barton, but the Bees tied the scored in the top of the third on Luis Gonzalez first home run of the year. The Chiefs struck back with a two-out rally against Bees starter Ambiorix Burgos in the fourth. After a pair of strikeouts, Barton walked, Omar Pena singled, and John Santor doubled down the left field line to drive in a run. Burgos (0-6) struck out Mike McCoy to end the inning, and worked a scoreless fifth, but the Bees never caught the Chiefs leaving him with his fifth straight losing start. Burgos finished with six strikeouts in five innings and is tied for third in the Midwest League with 59 K's.

The Chiefs added two more runs against reliever Jake Mullis in the sixth. Pena led off with a single and Santor homered to left. The ball was originally ruled in play by the base umpire Dixon Stureman, but was overruled to be a home run by the plate umpire Robert Price that led to a protest that led to Bees manager Jim Gabella's first ejection.

The Bees got two back in the top of the seventh without the benefit of a hit. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and scored after an error and a fielder's choice that got Brian McFall aboard. A stolen base, a wild pitch, and a groundout brought McFall in.

In the top of the eighth, the Bees loaded the bases with one out, but Justin Garza struck out Gonzalez and pinch-hitter Walter Sevilla to end the threat. The Chiefs added two more in the bottom of the eighth against Kahi Kaanoi as McCoy knocked a two-run single through a drawn-in infield.

The Chiefs used closer Jason Burch, their sixth pitcher of the night, in the top of the ninth inning and the Bees rallied. McFall walked and Angel Sanchez singled to bring the tying run to the plate, but Burch struck out Mitch Maier and Kenard Springer for his 12th save of the year. The hit extended Sanchez hitting streak to 13. Chris Lubanksi had two hits and has hit safely in seven straight.

The Bees continue this road trip with the first of four in Battle Creek against the Yankees tomorrow night. RH Greg Atencio (2-5, 4.70) will pitch for the Bees against LH Abel Gomez (5-0, 2.49). The game will start at 5:00 Central time and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 4:40.
