
John Sullivan selected by the Blue Bombers

WINNIPEG, MB â The Winnipeg Blue Bombers grabbed a talented safety with their final pick in today's college draft by selecting Waterloo's John Sullivan.
Winnipeg took Sullivan with their pick in the 6th Round (51st Overall) of the 2004 Canadian College Draft, held via teleconference call from the CFL's head office in Toronto.
Sullivan (6-1, 197, Waterloo '03, DOB: July 28, 1981 in Waterloo, ON) played four years with the University of Waterloo Warriors and was a finalist for the 2003 President's Trophy, losing out to fellow Blue Bomber draft choice Neil McKinlay.
"John is an outstanding safety in the Ontario conference," said wide receivers coach and Canadian College Draft coordinator Bob Dyce. "He's going to have to have a good opportunity to compete for a spot on our roster."
THE COLLEGE YEARS â WATERLOO WARRIORS
Sullivan was a co-winner of the Totzke Trophy, symbolic of the University of Waterloo's Male Athlete of the Year. His is a two-time team Most Valuable Player and a two-time Ontario Universities Association First-Team All-Star.
A finalist for the President's Trophy, Sullivan was the OUA's Defensive Player of the Year in 2003.
That year he had 66 defensive tackles to lead the CIS in that category. He added four fumble returns, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one quarterback sack. His season highlights including a massive 16-tackle performance against Western Ontario.
Sullivan participated in the 2004 CFL Evaluation Camp as well as the 2003 CIS East-West Bowl.
A political science major, he attended St. David's High School in Waterloo, Ontario.
DRAFT FACTS
Sullivan is the 38th player selected by the Blue Bombers in the 6th Round. He hopes to become the 8th player selected in the 6th Round to make the football club. The last to do so was Manitoba Bisons offensive lineman Matt Sheridan, who is presently a member of the Big Blue.
Sullivan is the 6th player from the University of Waterloo chosen by the Bombers in the Canadian College Draft. He hopes to become the 2nd Waterloo graduate to play for the Big Blue. The only player from the school to make the club was former Bomber great and defensive back Doug Strong, who was the team's 1st Round (1st Overall) pick in the 1969 Canadian College Draft. Winnipeg's top draft choice of the 1960s played six years for the Blue & Gold from 1969-1974.
Sullivan is the 33rd defensive back ever chosen by the Blue Bombers. He could become the 14th defensive back drafted to make the football club. The last to successfully do so was Andrew Henry from C.W. Post University, who played two seasons with the Big Blue from 1996-1997.
