Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today acquired the rights to a promising young athlete by selecting University of Regina punter/placekicker Jon Ryan.
The Big Blue obtained Ryan (6-0, 197, Regina Â’03, DOB: Nov. 26, 1981) with their 3rd Round (24th Overall) pick in todayÂ’s 2004 Canadian College Draft, held via teleconference call from the CFLÂ’s head office in Toronto.
“Jon has an outstanding leg and is an extremely good athlete,” said wide receivers coach and Canadian College Draft coordinator Bob Dyce. He was the best punter in the nation the last two years. We look forward to having him join our football club.”
Ryan is the 46th player selected by the Blue Bombers in the 3rd Round. He hopes to become the 15th player selected in the 3rd Round to make the football club. The last to do so was Ottawa Gee-Gees fullback Michael Shaver, who was a member of the Blue & Gold in 2002.
Ryan is the 3rd player chosen from the University of Regina. Winnipeg selected offensive tackle Todd Krenbrink and wide receiver Cory Olynick from Regina in the 2003 draft.
Ryan is the 9th kicker selected by the Blue Bombers in the history of the Canadian College Draft. He hopes to be the 4th kicker drafted to make the football club. The last kicker to do so was Augustana kicker Troy Westwood, who is still with the Big Blue.
