
Zwirchitz Shuts Down Long Island

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (June 25, 2003) â Atlantic City right-hander Andy Zwirchitz tossed a two-hitter through seven innings pitched in a 10-0 shutout of Long Island, Wednesday evening at the Sandcastle.
Zwirchitz (pronounced Squeez-itz) struck out six and walked just two to pick up his sixth consecutive victory and move to 6-1 on the year.
The Surf scored first after Raul Marval roped a solo home run over the left field wall in the first inning.
Atlantic City's first big inning came in the fourth after scoring four runs on a two-run double by Chad Gambill and a two-run base-hit off the bat of Willy Ruiz.
The Surf exploded for five more runs in the sixth frame after two walks and one hit batsman with the bases loaded plated three. The inning was capped off when Emison Soto roped a two-run single with the bases juiced to give Atlantic City a decisive 10-0 lead.
Surf relievers Lance Calmus and Rene Vega pitched the final two innings to preserve the victory for Zwirchitz.
Brandon Jackson, Soto and Ruiz each had two hits for the Surf while Luis Saturria had two of the Ducks' three hits in the game. Ducks left-fielder Derrick Gibson went 0-4 to snap his 20-game hitting streak.
The Surf improve to 25-25 on the season while Long Island drops to 24-27.
ON DECK: The Surf start a three-game series with South Division rival Somerset Patriots on Thursday, June 26, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle. It will be Splash's Birthday Party with special guest appearances by the Phillie Phanatic and other mascots from around the league and the area. In addition, birthday treats will be given out to the first 1,000 kids ages 3-12 courtesy of Tastykakes and Frosty Bites.
