Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Joe Bauldree fund will give $2,700 to the Raleigh Redwings U-12, an Amateur Athletic Union baseball team in Raleigh, North Carolina, this coming weekend.
Joe Bauldree died at the age of 25 from congenital heart failure on May 29 last season. The Ambassadors helped set up a memorial fund to raise money in Bauldree¹s name. The fund was designed to get money to kids to help them keep playing baseball.
The Redwings are a year round team that has been together for two years. They began as a team of eleven-year-olds with eleven players. Now the kids are twelve, and only one person has been added to the team. Team manager John Wigmore is quoted in the Raleigh Observer as saying that this philosophy of keeping the same team together sets the Redwings apart from the rest of the AAU teams, who are trying to get a better player every day on their roster.
The approach has worked. The Redwings are the number one AAU team in North Carolina with a 50-5 record this season, including 17 shutouts. The team is currently in the second round of the state AAU tournament.
The money will certainly help the Redwings. Wigmore is quoted in the Observer as saying that the Redwings, who do all of their own fundraising, need $15,000 a year to operate the team. That includes field rentals, tournament travel, equipment, and uniforms. Wigmore has several ideas for what to do with the money, but at the top of the list is new uniforms for the team with Bauldree¹s number 24 on the shoulder.
