North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit played Homerun Derby Wednesday night, but fell short 6-5 to Elmira at the New Fraser Field in Lynn. The Spirit Fell behind 4-2 leading into the eighth inning when Spirit first baseman Fran Riordan clouted his first homerun of the year to tie the score at 4-4 heading into the ninth inning.
In the ninth, the Pioneers scored twice off reliever Chad Bircher (1-4) to take a 6-4 lead. Elmira's Alex Marconi doubled to start the rally, and two consecutive hits by new-comers Dennis Abreu and Matt Williams drove home two.
In the bottom of the ninth, Spirit lead-off hitter Mike Tejada smashed his second homerun of the season down the line in right field to make the score 6-5. Next batter Jose Castellanos rapped a double to the gap and advanced to third on a Jason Startari sacrifice bunt. But Castellanos, representing the tying run, was cut down at the home plate when Marcos Agramonte bounced a fielder's choice to first. First baseman Ryan Lehr made a perfect throw to catcher Alex Marconi to erase the threat.
Spirit starter Miguel Baez was effective for 5 innings allowing just a homerun to Matt Williams (1st) before tiring in the sixth. Baez allowed 4 runs, all earned. Derrick DePriest was impressive working 3 solid innings of no hit, no run, three strike-out baseball in relief.
The Spirit play the final game of their four game series against Elmira Thursday at Fraser Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7PM.
