July 30, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The Memphis Redbirds took advantage of Wes Whisler's bout of first-inning wildness, scoring four times in the opening frame and hanging on to beat the New Orleans Zephyrs 6-4 on Friday night.

Whisler walked the game's first three batters, and threw a wild pitch in the inning as the Redbirds built a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.

A leadoff walk in the second led to another Memphis run, as Whisler walked opposing pitcher Lance Lynn, who scored on a single by Nick Stavinoha.

Stavinoha, the former LSU star, also had an RBI double in the fourth, and finished with three hits and three RBI.

Whisler (1-5) allowed six runs on seven hits with five walks, as his season ERA swelled to 7.22.

New Orleans began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth, when Mike Lamb and Brian Barden each doubled. The Z's got to within three the following inning, when Lamb hit a bases-loaded grounder that Memphis failed to convert into a double play, and when the throw to first got away from Stavinoha, Cousins came around to score from second.

Still trailing 6-3 in the ninth, the Zephyrs mounted a rally against Redbirds All-Star closer Fernando Salas, loading the bases with one out. Barden worked the count full before drawing a walk, forcing in a run, but Gookie Dawkins struck out and Brett Carroll lined out weakly to second as the Z's stranded the tying run in scoring position.

Lynn (8-8) picked up the win, yielding three runs - one earned - on eight hits in six innings.

The Zephyrs open a five-game series against division rival Albuquerque on Saturday at 6 p.m.
