New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

On Canada Night, it was only fitting that Montreal native Chris Leroux recorded the final three outs in a Zephyrs victory.

The Zephyrs blasted five home runs in a 9-5 win over the Las Vegas 51s on Tuesday night, snapping a three-game losing skid. The 51s, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, are the first affiliate of a Canadian team to visit Zephyr Field.

Cameron Maybin hit a two-run homer in the first inning off Las Vegas starter Brad Mills to put the Z's on top early. Las Vegas cut the lead in half the following inning, as Danny Perales took advantage of a pair of one-out walks with an RBI double.

Gookie Dawkins led off the third with a towering drive down the left field line, initially ruled foul by third base umpire John Brammer. After Zephyrs manager Greg Norton protested, Brammer conferred with his crew and the call was reversed, awarding Dawkins with his eighth home run of the season. Las Vegas pitching coach Dave LaRoche was ejected in an ensuing argument.

The 51s again responded the next half-inning, this time on a solo home run by Chris Lubanski, but the Zephyrs came right back in the bottom half with a one-out double by John Raynor and a run-scoring single by Brad Davis.

New Orleans got a pair of two-run homers in the fifth from Mike Lamb and John Raynor, opening up an 8-2 lead and chasing Mills (8-5) from the game. The Las Vegas lefty took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The 51s closed the game to 8-5 in the seventh, scoring three times against Zephyrs starter Brian Lawrence. Aaron Matthews delivered a two-run double, moved to third on a throwing error by Gookie Dawkins, and scored on a ground out by Raul Chavez. But Leroux combined with Brett Sinkbeil to shut down the 51s over the final 2 2/3 innings, securing the first win of the homestand.

Lawrence (10-7) gave up five runs - four earned - on six hits over 6 1/3 innings for the win. He struck out seven and walked three.

The series continues Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., with right-hander Alex Sanabia facing lefty Sean Henn.
