Zephyrs Trainer Mike Freer Named PCL Athletic Trainer of the Year

METAIRIE —The New Orleans Zephyrs, the Class AAA Pacific Coast League Affiliate of the Houston Astros is pleased to announce that Zephyrs Athletic Trainer Mike Freer has been named Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year for the Pacific Coast League for 2003. The award is given by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and is voted on by the trainers in the PCL.

"This is my twentieth season in professional baseball and I am honored to win this award," said Freer. "This means a lot to me since the award is voted on by my peers in the PCL."

Freer is in his seventh season with the Zephyrs and 14th with the Astros' minor league system. He worked his way up in the organization, beginning at Class A Kissimmee (1990-93), continuing with Double A Jackson (1994-96), and now with the Zephyrs (1997-Present).

"Mike Freer has been a key contributor to our training staff for the past 14 seasons, but his impact these past seven seasons has been so important to our efforts at the Major League level." said Astros assistant general manager and director of player development Tim Purpura. "Mike has helped many current and future members of our Major League team and we join PBATS in congratulating him on this well-deserved honor."

The 49-year-old Freer joined the Astros organization in 1990 after serving as head athletic trainer at the University of Richmond. He was also previously the head athletic trainer for the New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate at Norfolk. Freer is a 1976 graduate of Baylor University where he also earned a master's degree.

PBATS is a professional organization whose mission is to serve as an educational resource for the Major League and Minor League Baseball athletic trainers. PBATS serves its members by providing for the continued education of the athletic trainer as it relates to the profession, helping to improve each member's understanding of sports medicine so as to better promote the health of his constituency, professional baseball players.
