Alfaro, Stein Take PCL Awards

August 4, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– New Orleans Zephyrs infielder Jason Alfaro has won the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week award by collecting 15 hits in 30 at-bats during games beginning on July 28th and continuing through August 3rd. Alfaro is the second Zephyrs slugger to win the PCL accolade in as many weeks, and the fourth New Orleans player overall to win one of the League's weekly awards, joining Colin Porter and pitchers Doug Sessions and Rodrigo Rosario. Edmonton Trappers right-hander Blake Stein has been named Pitcher of the Week for the same period by not allowing a run in 10.2 innings over two appearances.

Alfaro, who hails from Fort Worth, Texas, collected at least two hits in all seven games he played throughout the week, including a 2-for-5 day with a home run and two runs batted in at Colorado Springs on July 29th. On August 1st, the Houston Astros prospect took advantage of a high-altitude shootout by going 3-for-5 with a homer, a triple, and four RBI in an 11-10 Zephyrs loss to the Sky Sox. When New Orleans returned home the next day, Alfaro continued his pace by going 2-for-3 with two doubles before ending the week on August 3rd with another 2-for-3 performance and another home run. For the week, the infielder collected eight RBI, seven runs scored, and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

McComb, Mississippi, native Blake Stein joined the Edmonton Trappers on July 7th from Double-A Harrisburg and has made an impact both as a starter and reliever, racking up two wins and two saves. On July 29th, the 6'7" Montreal Expos farmhand started a contest against Tacoma and threw eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four batters to earn the victory. On August 3rd, the versatile pitcher came out of the bullpen to throw 2.2 shutout innings of middle relief against Oklahoma, giving up one hit.
