Figueroa Tosses Gem In Sounds' 3-0 Win
August 4, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â In a series that has already featured a no-hitter, Nashville's Nelson Figueroa opened Monday's game at Greer Stadium by retiring the first 14 Sky Sox batters and went on to toss a complete-game three-hit shutout in the Sounds' 3-0 victory, which upped Nashville's lead in the Pacific Coast League's East Division to a season-high seven games.
With the win, the Sounds (67-48) moved 19 games over the .500 plateau â their most games over since they finished the 1999 season with an 80-60 mark. It was also Nashville's 13th shutout victory of the year, another PCL best, and the third complete-game shutout by a Sound (John Wasdin, Brian Meadows).
Figueroa (12-5) went the distance for the third time in 2003 to increase his league-leading victory total to 12, two ahead of several hurlers. Figueroa limited the PCL's fourth-best hitting team to three hits. He struck out eight, passing Wasdin for the season lead in the PCL with 121 punchouts. Figueroa's three complete games are tied for the most among circuit hurlers this season.
The Sounds offense would provide all the support Figueroa would need in the first inning. With one down, Dave Doster dropped a base hit into right field. J.J. Davis followed with his first of two doubles on the evening, advancing Doster to third, before Tony Alvarez drove in Doster with a groundout to third.
Doster, who banged out three hits in the game, added to the Sounds' lead in the bottom of the third inning with a solo blast deep over the left field wall, landing in the trees aligned behind Greer Stadium. The home run was Doster's fifth, all of which are of the solo variety.
Nashville scratched across its third run in the fourth inning. With one away, Aaron Holbert tripled into the gap in right-center. Blake Barthol followed by executing a suicide squeeze to perfection, allowing Holbert to cross the plate.
Colorado Springs starter Cory Vance (8-10) suffered the loss, allowing all three runs in his seven innings of work. David Newhan recorded two of the Sky Sox's three singles on the evening.
The Sounds and Sky Sox wrap up the first half of their nine-game stretch against each other on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Matt Bruback (7-9, 4.07) will make his third start for Nashville and face Sky Sox right-hander Scott Elarton (3-6, 5.85).
