Edmonton Trappers News Release
The Edmonton Trappers scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and go on to defeat the Oklahoma RedHawks 8-4 Monday afternoon at TELUS Field. The big inning marked the 12th time this season that the Trappers have plated five or more runs in a single frame. It was also the second time in this series that the Trappers have had a five-run inning. Edmonton has made a habit of coming from behind in this series. The club rebounded to down Oklahoma 6-2 on Saturday night and fell one-run short of another comeback on Sunday. Edmonton has come from behind to win 29 games this season and have won 11 games in their final at-bat. After struggled at the plate in late July the Trapper bats have come alive again this month. Edmonton has scored 27 runs and has banged out 49 hits in the last four games, three of which have been victories. The Trappers and RedHawks will conclude this four-game series on Tuesday night at TELUS Field. Edmonton will begin an eight-game road trip in Sacramento on Thursday night.
Oklahoma first baseman Jason Hart led off the second inning with his 16th home run of the season, giving the RedHawks an early lead. Trapper starter Sun Woo Kim (7-6) yielded a one-out home run to Oklahoma third baseman Marshall McDougall in the third frame. It was McDougall's first home run at the Triple-A level. Oklahoma starter Ryan Drese (5-6) retired 12 of the first 14 batters that he faced, but he got into big trouble in the fifth inning as the Trappers plated five runs on six hits. Matt Cepicky led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Scott Hodges. Randy Knorr then reached on an infield single that scored Cepicky. Hodges advanced to third on an error by Oklahoma second baseman Jeff Pickler, putting runners at the corners for Anthony Medrano, who tripled into the gap in left-center field, scoring Hodges and Knorr to give the Trappers their first lead of the game. With one out Luis Figueroa plated Medrano with a sacrifice fly and Terrmel Sledge followed with this 15th home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field.
With one down in the top of the sixth inning Oklahoma designated hitter Mike Lamb singled to center field. Hart followed with his second home run of the game, just inside the foul pole in left field to pull the RedHawks to within one run of the lead. McDougall singled with one out in the seventh and Kim hit the next batter, Ryan Christenson, to put runners on first and second. Newcomer Vic Darensbourg came on and got Picker and Lamb to fly out to get the Trappers out of that jam. Edmonton responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Dan Murray. Medrano drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to third on Peter Bergeron's single up the middle. Figueroa plated Medrano with a sacrifice fly to right field. With two out in the frame Ryan Balfe singled to put runners on the corners. Bergeron scored on a wild pitch by Murray and Valentino Pascucci knocked home his 75th run of the season with a single up the middle that scored Balfe from second with the final run of the game. Darensbourg and Tim Drew finished off the win for Kim with 2.2 scoreless innings in relief. The bullpen has now gone 15.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
