Lugo returns to rotation, sparks Express to third straight win
August 4, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
Shifted the bullpen ten weeks ago, Ruddy Lugo made a most triumphant return to the rotation Monday night, leading the Round Rock Express to a 5-2 win over the El Paso Diablos, their third straight.
Despite last making a start May 21, Lugo took the hill with poise and control and limited the Diablos to only three hits and a sole run over five innings. He struck out six and, coupled with Greg Powell's complete game shutout Sunday night in San Antonio, gave Round Rock's wary bullpen a chance to recharge.
He was bolstered by a balanced attack that saw eight of the nine batters in the starting lineup get a hit. Chris Burke was particularly disruptive at the top of the order, going 3 for 5 with a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored.
Following Lugo's outstanding start, Eric Ireland and Max Tremblay combined to allow only an unearned run in three innings. Eric Cammack threw a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Lugo improved to 4-10. Darvin Withers (5-3) got the loss after allowing four runs in 6.2 innings.
The second game of a six game series is Tuesday at 7 p.m.
