New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

A throwing error by Iowa catcher Luis Flores in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the go-ahead run to score, handing the New Orleans Zephyrs a 3-2 win over the Iowa Cubs on Monday night.

The Zephyrs have beaten the Cubs in each of the first four games of the series, and have won seven consecutive home games for the first time since 2007 to climb back to the .500 mark at 65-65.

Nick Green led off the winning rally against Cubs reliever Zach Rosscup with a single to right, and Bryan Petersen drew a walk. After Kyle Jensen's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position, Jordan Brown walked to load the bases and prompt a pitching change.

The Cubs turned to Marcos Mateo, who induced a potential inning-ending double play grounder from Chris Valaika . Third baseman Mike Olt threw home for the force out, but Flores 's throw to first skipped into right field, permitting Petersen to score the go-ahead run.

Rett Varner (2-3) retired the side in order in the ninth to finish off two perfect innings of relief and earn his second win in as many nights.

For the second game in a row, Iowa scored in the first inning to take a quick lead. Leadoff batter Jae-Hoon Ha struck out but reached on a wild pitch by Z's starter Brad Hand, then moved to second on a ground out and scored on a two-out single by Dave Sappelt .

Petersen led off the fourth with a triple into the right field corner and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jensen to even the score.

Iowa regained the lead in the sixth following a leadoff single by Edgar Gonzalez, who then got to third on a ground out and stolen base and scored on Ty Wright's sacrifice fly.

Kyle Skipworth drew the Zephyrs even again in the seventh with a towering home run just inside the right field foul pole, his ninth long ball of the season.

Neither Hand nor Cubs starter Casey Coleman factored into the decision. Hand gave up only two hits in six innings and was charged with two runs, while Coleman held the Zephyrs to one run on five hits in six innings. Rosscup (0-1) allowed a hit and two walks in the eighth and suffered the loss.

The Zephyrs go in search of their first sweep of a five-game series since 2001 on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
