San Diego Chicken Coming to Tucson One Final Time August 24
August 19, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Padres News Release
The most famous mascot in all of sports is returning to Kino Stadium on Saturday, August 24 for the Tucson Padres 7:05 pm game against Tacoma. The San Diego Chicken first appeared at a Triple-A baseball game in Tucson in 1989 and wanted to give one last performance in honor of the Tucson Padres final season. The San Diego Chicken and Johnny Bench also filmed the TV show "The Baseball Bunch" in Tucson from 1981 - 1985.
The San Diego Chicken originally planned to take the 2013 season off but decided to return to Tucson as one of only two baseball game appearances this year. When the Colorado Springs Sky Sox were told by local authorities they couldn't hold a July 4th fireworks show because of wildfire threats, the San Diego Chicken offered his services to the Sky Sox. After that show went well, he thought of his long-standing relationship with Tucson Padres GM Mike Feder and booked an appearance at Kino Stadium.
"It's been my pleasure to work with Ted Giannoulas (the San Diego Chicken) for more than 30 years. He is a class act and cares about the fans of Tucson," said Feder.
The Saturday, August 24th game is one of the strongest promotional nights the Tucson Padres have ever had. In addition to the San Diego Chicken appearance, there is a Giant Post-Game Fireworks Spectacular, the final fireworks show of the season. Also, Beto Coyote, the popular mascot of the Naranjeros de Hermosillo from the Mexican Winter League, will come up from Mexico for an appearance. Beto will be joining forces with the San Diego Chicken for entertaining on-field shows.
"The Tucson Padres front office is excited about what we have scheduled for the final Saturday home game. We are expecting a huge crowd. This will be a memorable night for all Tucson Padres fans," said Feder.
For Tucson Padres tickets, fans can call (520) 434-1367 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm on weekdays. Tickets are also available during those business hours in person at Kino Stadium and available at all hours online at tucsonpadres.com.
