Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis returned to AutoZone Park on a roll winning seven of their last 10 games but New Orleans used a four-run sixth inning to win 4-3.
The Redbirds led 3-0 going into the sixth inning but the Zephyrs hit back-to-back home runs and Kenny Kelly drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out two-RBI double. Bernie Castro and Henry Mateo belted back-to-back home runs off Memphis starter Randy Leek to put the Z's on the board in the sixth. Memphis left four runners in scoring position, including two at third base, over the last four innings. Brian Esposito hit his second home of the year and John Nelson had two doubles for the Redbirds.
Randy Leek (2-5) was tagged with the loss, his fourth straight, after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander allowed two home runs and fanned three with one walk. Billy Traber (4-3) picked up the win with five innings of work allowing three runs on eight hits. The Zephyrs' bullpen provided relief with four shutout innings. Roy Corcoran pitched the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his first save for New Orleans this season.
Memphis and New Orleans will play tomorrow afternoon at 2:10 p.m. Travis Smith (1-0) will pitch his first game at AutoZone Park as a Redbird since 2002. Steve Watkins (1-0) will toe the rubber for the Zephyrs.
