Grizzlies blank Sidewinders

Fresno - The Fresno Grizzlies shout out the Tucson Sidewinders by a score of 2-0 on Friday night at Grizzlies Stadium to earn a split of the four game series. Fresno won the season series from Tucson ten games to six.

Juan Melo provided the game's only offense with a two run homer to right off Dustin Nippert in the bottom of the third inning. Nippert (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season and first since July 26, 2005 when he was pitching for Double-A Tennessee. He went five innings and surrendered four hits. He walked four and struck out four.

Pedro Liriano earned his first win of the season for Fresno. Liriano (1-2) went six innings and allowed just two hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Jack Taschner worked the final two innings for his fourth save. He stranded two Tucson baserunners in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Tucson remains in first place in the Pacific Southern division. The Sidewinders lead Sacramento by a game and Las Vegas by 1 ½.

The Sidewinders return home Saturday to open an eight game homestand at Tucson Electric Park. Tucson will meet the Portland Beavers in game one of a four game series on Saturday night at 7:00. Right-hander Adam Bass (1-0 3.38) will start for the Sidewinders against right-hander Eric Junge (4-4 4.37) for Portland. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
