Zephyrs Hammer Three Home Runs in a Win at Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - Donnie Murphy drilled a pair of solo home runs and Gil Velazquez picked up four of the 16 hits on the night for the victorious New Orleans Zephyrs. The Zephyrs defeated the Iowa Cubs 6-1 in the first game of a four game series.

J.D. Martin pitched seven innings, allowed one run on four hits and improved his record to 5-7.

The Zephyrs offense picked up three first inning hits but could not cash in leaving the bases loaded without scoring. The Z's scored a run in the third with a two out fielders' choice by Mike Cervenak.

The Z's Donnie Murphy hit a pair of solo home runs in the game. A solo home run led off the fourth and added another in the fifth inning. Cervanek led off the fifth inning with a solo home run.

New Orleans scored two additional runs in the eighth inning to cap the win. Velazquez had four hits in five at bats, scored a run and drove home a run.

Rodrigo Lopez pitched five innings and took the loss for Iowa.

Game Notes -Mike Cervenak failed to reach base on Sunday, snapping a 34 game consecutive on base streak, third longest in PCL this season. The Z's have hit a league leading 28 home runs in 13 games in July. The Zephyrs scored first in the game, for the 23rd time in their last 27 games.
