10-Run 1st Sets up Sox 15-6 Win over Salt Lake

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox got out of the gate in a major way on Monday night at Security Service Field as they erupted for ten runs on nine hits in the first inning alone and then cruised to a 15-6 win over the Salt Lake Bees in front of 2,549 fans. The offensive explosion was the fourth time in team history that the club plated ten or more runs in the first inning and the first time since the team scored ten runs against the Fresno Grizzlies on May 22, 2007.

In the first inning the Sky Sox sent 14 batters to the plate, with eight of the nine Colorado Springs starters scoring in the frame and second baseman DJ LeMahieu and rightfielder Andrew Brown scoring twice. It was the most runs scored in one inning this season by the Sox and is tied for the second most runs scored in the first inning in franchise history, trailing only the 12 runs Colorado Springs scored against Salt Lake on May 9, 1997. Every Sky Sox hitter had multiple hits in the game and seven of nine batters had multiple runs scored.

With three hits in the game Andrew Brown extended his league-leading on-base streak to 33 games, the longest on-base streak for the Sox since Matt Murton's 38-game streak during the 2009 season. Colorado Springs has scored three of their four highest run totals against Salt Lake this season, and have scored 30 runs in their last two matchups against the Bees as they scored 15 runs in the finale in the last series on June 22. The Sox came in to the game owning the best team batting average with runners in scoring position, and added to their league-leading mark by going 11-for-20 in the game in that situation.

Colorado Springs starter Nick Schmidt (1-2, 9.00 ERA) earned his first career Triple-A win going five innings allowing six runs after the Sky Sox had already given him 12-0 lead after the first two innings. In Schmidt's first two starts for the Springs, the Sky Sox had put up only three runs total in the two games. After Salt Lake cut the lead to 12-6 in the fifth, Colorado Springs relievers Jason Bergmann and Will Harris limited the Bees to one baserunner over the final four innings and retired the last nine batters in order to finish out the game.

The win is the sixth consecutive series-opening win in series played at Security Service Field, and gives the Sox the slight edge in the season series with the Bees at 5-4 on the year. In the second game of the four-game set, the Sky Sox will send out right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (5-4, 5.58 ERA) to face off with Salt Lake lefty Brad Mills (3-4, 4.76 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. MT.
