WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Dan Straily earned the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week while Michael Taylor was named the PCL Player of the Week for their performances last week, the league announced today.
In a week cut short by the All-Star break, Straily had one start on July 13, striking out a team-season-high 13 batters while allowing just one hit and two walks. Straily currently paces all of professional baseball with 154 strikeouts this season in 118.1 innings pitched. The next three highest strikeout totals for the year are owned by Felix Hernandez (140), Justin Verlander (136) and Stephen Strasburg (135).
Since joining the River Cats this season, Straily is 3-2 with a 1.09 ERA in 33.0 innings pitched, spanning five starts. He has 46 strikeouts and 11 walks, and has only allowed a total of four runs. He is scheduled to pitch again on Wednesday, July 18, at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.
Taylor paced the River Cats offense this week, going 7-for-13 (.538) with a 1.744 OPS. He ended the week tallying a home run and three RBIs in each of Sacramento's weekend wins, extending his season-high-tying hitting streak to 10 games.
On the year, Taylor is hitting .312 with eight home runs, 47 RBIs, 55 runs scored and 24 doubles. He currently ranks fourth in the league with a .418 on-base percentage and second with 53 walks. He has appeared in four games with the Oakland A's this season, going 3-for-16 (.188).
The River Cats return to Raley Field on Friday, July 20, for a Toyota Family Value Night where the team will also be celebrating Peace, Love and Baseball. RHP Brad Peacock (7-6, 6.75 ERA) will get the start for Sacramento, as the team welcomes the Tucson Padres to town for a four-game homestand at Raley Field.
