New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs and Nashville Sounds opened a four-game series from Zephyr Field on Saturday night, with the Sounds topping the Z's 8-3.

Zephyrs starter Rick VandenHurk lasted four innings, allowing five runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out two. After Chris Schroder pitched two scoreless innings, fellow reliever Jose Veras was touched for three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Adalberto Mendez finished the game for the Z's, pitching 1.2 innings of one-hit ball.

After a solo home run by Sounds third baseman Adam Heether in the top of the first inning, Emilio Bonifacio led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Bryan Petersen.

The Sounds would waste little time in moving back ahead, scoring two runs in the top of the second for a lead they would never relinquish. Nashville would add two in the fourth and three in the eighth, driving home eight runs on 12 hits.

For the Zephyrs, catcher Brad Davis added his first home run and RBI of the year on a solo shot in the second inning off of Sounds starter Chuck Lofgren. Lofgren improved to 3-1 on the year, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on five hits while surrendering three walks and striking out two.

The teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm at Zephyr Field for game two of the series. Z's starter Ryan Tucker (0-0, 1.59) is scheduled to come off the disabled list for his third start of the season and will be matched up against Marco Estrada (0-0, 2.50) for Nashville.
