TONIGHT: The RedHawks open a 4-game series with the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals) at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark five days after concluding a series with them in Memphis. Tonight is also the first of an 8-game homestand. The RedHawks split the series in Nashville that ended last night, dropping a 3-0 decision. It marked the first time OKC had been blanked this season. The RedHawks were 5-3 on the trip that included winning 3 of 4 in Memphis. OKC is atop the American South Division, 1.5 games up on New Orleans and Albuquerque. Memphis is second in the American North, 2 games back of Nashville.
HOLLAND'S STREAK ENDS: It took until the eighth inning, but Nashville ended Derek Holland's scoreless inning streak and pinned a loss on Holland last night, 3-0. Holland's streak reached 21.2 innings before the Sounds scored 3 in the eighth (1 earned). Holland's ERA is still a league-best 0.67 and he has surrendered just 2 earned runs on the season in 27 innings.
LOE MAINTENANCE: Former RedHawk Kameron Loe dueled with Derek Holland last night and emerged with the win after tossing 8 shutout innings, combining with a 1-2-3 ninth from Chris Smith to hand OKC its first blanking of the season. Loe spent parts of 4 seasons with Oklahoma City from 2004-08 and last night was his first appearance against his former organization.
SMOAK, DAVIS SWITCH SPOTS: Justin Smoak made his major league debut last night after having his contract purchased from Triple-A. Smoak went 0-for-2 with 2 walks in the Rangers' 5-4 win over Detroit. The Rangers optioned first baseman Chris Davis to the RedHawks. Smoak left the PCL leading the circuit in walks with 16 and fourth in on-percentage at .470.
TRACY AMONG LEADERS: Chad Tracy is among the league leaders in several categories. He's first in total bases (42), tied for second in homers (5), tied for third in RBIs (14), fourth in slugging (.689) and tied for fifth in hits (21).
TEAM RANKINGS: OKC's 3.02 team ERA is best in the league. The RedHawks have the lowest WHIP (walks + hits per innings pitched) at 1.13. Offensively, the RedHawks are second in the PCL in team batting average (.278), on-base percentage (.356) and slugging (.447). OKC is second in homers with 17 and tied for second in triples with 8.
SALTALAMACCHIA'S REHAB CONTINUES: Texas Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia caught all 9 innings last night and is slated to catch the entire game tonight as he continues a rehab assignment. He played every game of the Nashville series, catching 5 innings Tuesday, serving as the DH Wednesday and catching 7 on Thursday. He went on the Rangers' 15-day DL April 8 with a left upper back strain after starting the season opener, driving in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the ninth, and pinch hitting during the next game. More information on him can be found on page 5 of today's notes.
BULLPEN STREAKERS: Clay Rapada has put together a 7.2-inning scoreless streak over his last 5 games...Pedro Strop has not allowed an earned run in his last 6 games, spanning 5.1 innings. Strop did take a blown save and a loss on Monday in Memphis by allowing an inherited runner to score, plus his own unearned run. Omar Beltre has 2 saves in his last 3 games, tossing 4 scoreless innings. Willie Eyre has not allowed a hit or a run in his last 3 games covering 4 innings. Geoff Geary has pitched 4.1 scoreless innings over his last 2 outings.
ODDS AND ENDS: OKC is 2-2 in series openers...Gregorio Petit had his streak of playing every inning at shortstop end last night when Esteban German started in his place...German has starts at 5 positions this season (2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF).
