Zephyrs Break Through to Snap Losing Streak

Marcell Ozuna delivered a pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the go-ahead run, and the New Orleans Zephyrs went on to defeat the Memphis Redbirds, 8-5 on Thursday night.

The Zephyrs snapped their club-record 10-game losing streak, and prevented the Redbirds from recording their first-ever series sweep at Zephyr Field.

The Z's took advantage of 10 walks, equaling a season high, to overcome a pair of two-run deficits through the first six innings. Jordany Valdespin led off the seventh with a double to the wall in right field and a single by Jhonatan Solano put runners at the corners for Ozuna, who laced a single to right to put New Orleans on top, 5-4.

Ozuna finished the homestand 11-for-26 with four doubles, a home run and four RBI in eight games.

Valdespin crushed a two-run homer in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-4, and Juan Diaz added an RBI single after Solano doubled to right.

Nick Wittgren worked around a two-out home run by Nick Martini in the ninth to close out his 12th save and the Zephyrs' first home win since July 5.

The Zephyrs tallied a first-inning run for the first time since July 9 on a two-out RBI single by Isaac Galloway, but Memphis answered with two runs in the second as Dean Anna blooped a single to left and scored when Nick Martini tripled past Galloway in center.

Anna knocked in his second run of the game with another single in the fourth, only for the Zephyrs to come back in their half of the frame on a single by Kila Ka'aihue.

Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, New Orleans drew three straight walks to load the bases with one out. The Z's had stranded three runners in both the third and fourth innings, but Brady Shoemaker grounded a two-run single to left to drive in the tying run.

Zephyrs starter Adam Conley was in search of his ninth win to tie for the league lead, but did not factor into the decision after allowing four runs and eight hits in six innings. Greg Nappo (1-2) retired all three batters he faced in the seventh to earn the victory.

Mitch Harris (0-1) gave up a run on three hits in the Zephyrs' seventh-inning rally to suffer the loss.

The Z's open a four-game series in Nashville on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
