Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa (July 23, 2015) - A seventh inning Iowa error allowed the Round Rock Express (56-41) to push across the winning run to help defeat the I-Cubs (52-46) 3-2 in Pacific Coast League action Thursday afternoon at Principal Park. Iowa lost the final three games to lose the series 3-1.

Round Rock drew first blood with two runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Tommy Field and an RBI groundout from Brett Nicholas.

In the bottom of the third, Iowa got revenge thanks to a two-run homer from Mike Baxter, his first of the season and first home run since Aug. 18, 2014.

Round Rock took the lead in the seventh on an unearned run. Michael Choice walked to leadoff the inning, then advanced to third on a throwing error by Iowa starter Felipe Paulino (2-6) as he tried to pick over the first. Choice then scored two batters later on an RBI single from Chris Gimenez.

Paulino allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings to earn a quality start, despite being saddled with the loss. Righty Ben Rowen twirled 1.2 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts. RIght-hander Brian Schlitter loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but escaped the jam to keep Iowa within a run.

Express righty Alec Asher (3-5) surrendered two runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Left-hander Will Lamb and right-handers Francisco Mendoza and Jon Edwards combined for 3.0 scoreless innings to finish out the game. Edwards nailed down his 18th save on the back of three strikeouts in the ninth.

Matt Szczur paced Iowa with three infield hits, a walk and a run scored. Baxter drove in two as part of a two-hit day.

Gimenez led Round Rock with two hits, an RBI, a walk and scored a run. Choice, Ed Lucas and Joey Gallo each reached base twice and registered a hit.

The I-Cubs will now travel to Memphis to start a four-game series with the Redbirds, Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Carlos Pimentel (7-5, 3.14) will take the hill for Iowa opposite Redbirds lefty Tyler Lyons (6-5, 3.33). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:40 p.m. CT.
