Bridgeport Islanders News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Jeff Zatkoff made big save after big save totaling 31 stops as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 in Manchester on Saturday night. The Monarchs improve to 30-16-1-3. The Sound Tigers fall to 19-23-3-3.
The Monarchs grabbed a 1-0 lead just 4:39 into the first period. Sound Tigers forward Brady Leisenring was sent off for tripping and Manchester converted just six seconds into the man-advantage. Viatcheslav Voynov's shot from the point got through David Meckler's screen of Sound Tigers netminder Joel Martin and Manchester had the one-goal lead.
The Sound Tigers responded 1:28 into the second period with their own power play goal from a defenseman. Almost a repeat of the Monarchs goal, Mark Katic held the puck in the high slot and fired a shot through traffic that beat Manchester goaltender Jeff Zatkoff to tie the game 1-1. However, the Monarchs retook the lead at the 7:26 mark of the middle frame. Richard Clune took a feed from behind the Sound Tigers net and banged it past Joel Martin to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead.
The Sound Tigers had a couple of great chances following Clune's tally, but Dylan Reese's one-timer and Brandon Svendsen's shorthanded breakaway opportunity were both stopped by Zatkoff. The Sound Tigers tied the game on another great chance at 14:30 of the period. Jesse Joensuu fed the puck to Rob Hisey on a two-on-one, and the first-year Sound Tiger netted his seventh goal of the year to tie the score at two. The seesaw second period continued as Manchester took the lead once more just a minute after Hisey's goal. Oscar Moller skated in along the right side of the Sound Tigers zone and fired a slap shot that deflected off Martin and trickled across the goal line. It was Moller's 11th goal of the season, and the Sound Tigers trailed 3-2 heading to the final period of play.
The Sound Tigers now head to the All-Star Break and play their next game on Feb. 4 when they travel to XL Center to face the Connecticut Whale at 7 p.m.
