Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - Vladimir Zharkov scored for the Albany Devils, but the team lost, 6-1, to the Rochester Americans Saturday. The Devils hosted the first ever "Paws and Pucks" Night at the Times Union Center and 109 dogs accompanied their owners to the game. Five dollars of the $20 ticket went to the Mohawk & Hudson Humane Society.
On the ice, the Amerks scored a pair of goals in each the first, second and third periods. They improve to 21-23-3-2. The loss moves the Devils record to 18-25-0-3.
"That just wasn't a good team effort tonight," said Devils captain Stephen Gionta. "That's not the game you want going into [All-Star] break; we don't feel too good about the break. We had some chance to gain some points and we didn't take advantage."
Jacob Markstrom was responsible for the victory in goal; he made 24 saves on 25 shots. Dave Caruso absorbed the loss with 23 stops on 29 tries.
"They just outworked us as a team," Gionta said. "We didn't win any battles and that's what happens when you don't come to play and it shows on the scoreboard."
Albany's goal came on a deflection off a Rob Davison shot in the closing minute of the game. Zharkov tipped home his eighth of the season with 51 seconds remaining.
The Devils entered the contest not allowing a goal against the Americans in 121 minutes and 19 seconds. Kenndal McArdle ended that streak on the power play with a wrister at 10:59 of the first period, putting Rochester up 1-0. The shutout streak ended at 132 minutes and 18 seconds.
The Amerks, who held a 15-5 shot advantage in the first, cashed in before the buzzer when Chris Taylor picked a corner with 56.1 seconds remaining.
A second power-play goal made it 3-0 at 7:29 of the second. This time Mike Kostka found the back of the net. Then A.J. Jenks followed with the team's fourth goal at 15:35.
In the third, Rochester got goals from Michael Duco at 16:29 on the power play and from Jordan Knackstedt at 16:47.
Next up, the AHL hosts the 2011 All-Star Classic in Hershey, Pa. on Sunday, Jan. 30 and on Monday, Jan. 31. The Devils return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 4 against the Hershey Bears. The 7 p.m. contest will be held at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.
