Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack is very proud to announce that Canadian Women's Downhill Ski Member, Larisa Yurkiw will be on hand to drop the puck on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 when the Attack play host to the London Knights.
Yurkiw, who attended Dufferin Elementary & West Hill Secondary School in Owen Sound, competed as a Junior at her home club of Georgian Peaks just outside of nearby Thornbury, ON. After dominating the Junior ranks, Larisa made her debut on the FIS World Cup at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria in a downhill event. From 2008 to 2009, she reached the top 30 seven times. In 2009, she achieved a personal best at Tarvisio, Italy when she placed 9th in the Super Combined discipline.. However, her most notable race came January 17, 2009 at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee when she stunned the field by posting the fastest time in the downhill portion of a combined event. She earned two gold medals at the 2008 Canadian National Championships in Super-G and downhill, and three silver medals in 2009. Since she was still considered a junior in both 2008 and 2009, she went on to become the Canadian National Junior Champion in downhill, giant slalom, and slalom.
Yurkiw hoped to represent Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and her chances were considered very strong by many, however; her season was cut short On December 16, 2009 at Val d'Isere where she suffered an ACL tear in her left knee.
The Owen Sound Attack is very proud to be able to welcome home one of our local hero's who has represented herself and our community on the international stage. Game time on Wednesday March 3rd is 7:00 pm. Tickets are available by visiting the Attack Box Office or by calling the Box Office at (519) 371-7452.
