Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The kids, as they say, are alright.
Drew Elliott put on a show in his first game on home ice, recording his first two career QMJHL goals and adding an assist, while Patrick Leblanc also scored his first career QMJHL goal as the Islanders defeated the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 4-1.
"It feels great to be here and get these first games under my belt." said Elliott on his first game at the Eastlink Centre.
Elliott kicked off the scoring in a big way, with a highlight-reel goal. The 16-year-old split the Titan before stepping in and wiring a shot past Bathurst starter Felix-Anthony Ethier. Re-calling the play, Elliott remembers it much more simply than that.
"I just got the first shot off and that was it," explained Elliott. "I haven't scored all year, so just wanted to get shots on net and this one went in. Pretty excited to get the first one off my back."
The Titan would tie the game up in the second period thanks to Logan Chisholm. The 18-year-old would score a similar goal to Elliott's, walking in to the zone and firing it on Jacob Goobie for his seventh goal of the season.
The teams would stay deadlocked until Leblanc got involved. Off an Oscar Plandowski point shot, the slender forward drove hard to the net and got his stick on a loose puck and poked it past Ethier.
The goal was the truest representation of a slump-buster for Leblanc. The forward was known for his scoring prowess in major midget, having just last season posted the fourth-highest point total in NBPEIMMHL history with 74 points in 35 games; however, to this point in the season, besides a pair of assists, Leblanc had been held scoreless. He said he's extremely happy to get that one out of the way.
"It feels really good." he said matter-of-factly. "To finally get the first one out of the way, and get a big win for the guys, is amazing."
"It was a great play by Oscar to get the puck towards the net. I just crashed hard and was able to get a stick on it."
The goal would stand as the game-winner. Elliott would add his second goal of the game with just over five minutes remaining, while Cole Edwards would put the game on ice just minutes later, securing the Islanders victory.
Plandowski would add two assists in the game, while Cedric Desruisseaux, Justin Gill, William Trudeau, Zac Beauregard, and Drew Johnston would each add single assists. For Elliott, the three points now gives him four points in just two games as an Islander. He says that playing two quick games right after Christmas was good for integrating him in to the Islanders family.
"It's been great so far. This has been a good way to bond with the boys early and have some laughs on the road. I'm happy here." he said.
The Islanders will be in action next on New Year's Eve when they take on the Cape Breton Eagles on the road. Puck drop is a special matinee 2:00pm time! Join Eagles play-by-play announcer Patrick MacNeil as he'll have the call on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio!
