Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Hurley Cup is coming back to Cape Breton following a 5-3 victory for the Eagles over the Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday afternoon in Sydney. The Eagles won the opening game 7-1 in Halifax, and captured the two game, total goal series by a count of 12-4.
The Eagles carried the opening period, and Derek Gentile put the home side on the board before the five minute mark. The Eagles forward found himself in front of the net facing the opposite side and spun around to put it behind Mooseheads goaltender Cole McLaren for the only goal of the period.
Period two would see more scoring. Zach Jones burned up the right wing for Halifax to score on a nice individual effort, but just 30 seconds later, Félix Lafrance beat McLaren low along the ice to restore the lead. Before period's end, the Eagles would establish a two goal cushion when Liam Kidney finished a beautiful cross ice pass from Ivan Ivan.
There was bad news for the Eagles in the second period however, as Ryan Francis took a stick to the face. He would not return for the rest of the game but is not expected to miss any further action.
Down a player, the Eagles would trade goals with the Mooseheads in the final period. Halifax would be given some life when Kevin Gursoy zoomed through the neutral zone and into Eagles territory, putting one by Kevin Mandolese to make it a 3-2 game.
A power play would help the Eagles get back the momentum. With Halifax's Samuel Dubé in the box, the Eagles would begin to carry the play and just after the penalty expired, Nathan Larose converted a pass at the side of the net to push the edge to 4-2.
With under five minutes to play, Jason Horvath helped cut the lead again, firing a shot from the side boards that was tipped by Jordan McKenna to make it a 4-3 score. However, Larose would take control of the game once more, with under three minutes to play, skating up the right side of the ice and putting the puck over the shoulder of McLaren. There would be no further scoring the Eagles would win the game 5-3.
The Eagles will play their final game of 2019 on Tuesday, New Year's Eve, against the Charlottetown Islanders. Puck drop is a special time of 2 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
