Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Two early scoring rallies were enough for the South Bend Silver Hawks (Class-A/Arizona Diamondbacks) to defeat the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) on Monday night, 5-1. It was the opener of a three-game series for Bowling Green, and also the lid-lifter of a seven-game homestand.
South Bend got out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the second. With one out, Jamie Westbrook singled to left field. One out later, D.J. Bowman homered into the left-field bullpen to give South Bend the 2-0 edge.
The lead swelled to 5-0 in the third, again with two outs. Daniel Palka started the rally with a base hit, and he would steal second base on a close play. Joe Munoz followed with a single to drive home Palka. Justin Williams, who was playing in his first game for South Bend this season, then tripled into the left-center field gap to plate Munoz. The inning was capped when Westbrook singled home Williams, and the Hot Rods faced a 5-0 deficit after just three innings.
Bowling Green would get on the board in the sixth inning. Ty Young led off the frame with a towering home run that smashed off the scoreboard in right-center field, and it cut the deficit to 5-1. It was Young's ninth home run of the season, making him the active leader for the Hot Rods. His round tripper unfortunately was the only piece of scoring for Bowling Green on Monday night in the 5-1 defeat.
Danville, Ky., native Blake Perry (6-4) worked five scoreless innings to earn the victory for South Bend, as he avenged his last outing when Perry lasted just two outs and conceded five runs against the Hot Rods.
Isaac Gil (0-1) allowed five runs over his three innings and picked up the loss. Ben Griset was phenomenal in his second appearance as a reliever for Bowling Green, he faced just two above the minimum in his five innings and struck out six.
The Hot Rods will look to return to their winning ways at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday night. It will be T-Shirt Tuesday presented by All About You Urgent Clinic, and gates will open at 6 p.m. CT for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Fans will want to get to the ballpark early for the t-shirt giveaway. Fans can logon to BGHotRods.com, call 270-901-2121, or stop by the Bowling Green Ballpark box office for tickets and more information.
