Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa ( August 4, 2014 ) - George Springer struck out once, walked twice and stole a base in his rehab debut as a designated hitter with the Quad Cities River Bandits, and third baseman J.D. Davis hit a first-inning, three-run home run, but Monday's game against the Burlington Bees was suspended with a 3-3 tie before the start of the sixth inning Monday and will be resumed at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday before a regularly scheduled nine-inning game at Modern Woodmen Park. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Monday's game was the third suspended for Quad Cities (21-21 second half, 56-55 overall) this season and fourth for Burlington (19-23, 57-54). The two teams also had a suspended game May 21 in Davenport that they completed to a 12-4 Bees win in Burlington May 25.
Batting third in the River Bandits lineup in his first career game in the Midwest League, Springer struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch in his first at-bat against Bees right-hander Garrett Nuss. In the third inning, Springer walked on a two-out, 3-2 pitch and stole second base on the first pitch Nuss threw to first baseman A.J. Reed. Springer also walked to load the bases with two outs in the fifth inning before being removed for pinch runner Chase McDonald. Nuss struck out Reed to end the fifth inning before play was suspended due to rain showers.
In the teams' first meeting since June 6, Burlington took a lead within the first two batters of the game. Left-hander Chris Lee allowed a leadoff single by Bees second baseman Kody Eaves, and an RBI double down the first-base line by center fielder Bo Way, who was thrown out trying to reach third base by right fielder Marc Wik throwing to third baseman J.D. Davis.
In the bottom of the first inning, River Bandits left fielder Ryan Bottger hit a one-out single to left field, and Reed lined a two-out single to left field. On the next pitch, Davis extended his eight-game hitting streak with his first Midwest League home run to right field for a 3-1 lead. Quad Cities did not record another hit against Nuss, who allowed three earned runs with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings.
Lee induced a ground-ball double play in both the second and fourth innings, but he allowed single runs in both the third and fifth innings. In the third, Eaves hit a one-out single, stole second base and and scored on a single by third baseman Zach Houchins. In the fifth inning, shortstop Erick Salcedo drew a leadoff walk, advanced on two groundouts and scored the tying run on Houchins two-out RBI single. Lee allowed three earned runs on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts in five innings.
In the rain during the bottom of the fifth inning, River Bandits second baseman Dayne Parker drew a leadoff walk, and Bottger and Springer drew two-out walks to load the bases. Reed's strikeout ended the inning before play was halted and the tarp put on the field.
With a 3-3 tie in the top of the sixth inning, the teams will resume Monday's game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Following the completion of the suspended game, the teams will play a regularly scheduled nine-inning game, featuring a pitching matchup of two 2014 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game participants - River Bandits right-hander Michael Feliz (6-4) and Bees right-hander Victor Alcantara (6-5).
