York Revolution News Release
Waldorf, MD - The York Revolution were held in check on Friday night, falling to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-2 in front of 4,913 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Revs (35-26) see their four-game winning streak snapped. Entering the night with a season-high 4.5-game lead over Sugar Land for first place, the Revs will look to rebound on Saturday at Southern Maryland with nine games to go in the season's first half.
The Revs jumped in front as leadoff man Travis Witherspoon, who connected on game-winning home runs in the team's final at-bat each of the previous two nights, drilled the third pitch of the evening from Blue Crabs starter Brian Burres over the fence in left field for a 1-0 lead. It marked Witherspoon's fifth home run of the year and the Revs' third game-opening leadoff home run of the season, all at Regency Furniture Stadium (Jason Repko, May 7 and May 8).
York missed a chance to extend the lead in the third. Witherspoon reached on an error to lead things off and stole second on a strikeout. Two-out walks to Andres Perez and Michael Burgess loaded the bases, but Burres recorded a fly out to escape.
Both momentum and the scoreboard swung in Southern Maryland's favor, as the Blue Crabs took the lead with two runs in their half of the third, and two more in the fourth.
D'Arby Myers kicked things off with a single to right to lead off the third, while Angel Sanchez was hit by a pitch to put two men on. Bryant Nelson sacrificed both runners ahead. With the infield back, Zach Wilson chipped a ground ball toward first base. With Perez positioning to field, the ball changed direction and rolled into shallow right, with two runs scoring on what was charged an error.
Myers added a broken bat two-run double down the left field line in the fourth, extending Southern Maryland's lead to 4-1.
Angel Flores led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to left, moved to third on a sac bunt by Eric Garcia, and scored on a sac fly to center from Jon Dziomba, upping the hosts' lead to 5-1.
Burres (5-4) settled in, retiring each of his final nine batters faced to earn the win. The lefty stuck out eight and allowed just Witherspoon's leadoff homer and four total hits in six innings of work.
Navery Moore maneuvered past a pair of infield hits for a scoreless seventh, while Justin Berg closed it out by working the final two innings.
The Revs did get to Berg for a ninth inning run and brought the tying run to the plate. Alfredo Marte worked a leadoff walk and scored on Josh Wilson's double down the left field line. With one out, Witherspoon singled to left to bring the Revs one swing away from tying it, but Berg rebounded to record a strike out and a fielder's choice to seal the deal.
Tony Pena (5-2) suffered the loss for York, charged with five runs (four earned) in six innings. Michael Click and Mariel Checo each logged 1-2-3 innings out of the Revolution bullpen.
Witherspoon led York, going 4-for-5 with the leadoff home run and a pair of steals. He has now hit safely in all eight of his games with York, and has tallied six steals and eight runs scored. Marte and Wilson each chipped in two-hit nights.
Myers led the Blue Crabs, going 3-for-3 out of the ninth position, and is now 7-for-8 with four doubles and a triple in the first two games of the series. Flores enjoyed a 3-for-4 performance.
