York Revolution News Release
(Waldorf, Md.) - Travis Witherspoon provided the game-winning home run for the second straight night, this time in the top of the 11th, as the first-place York Revolution pulled off a resilient, wild 12-8 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium. The win is the fourth straight for the Revs (35-25) who now lead the Freedom Division by a season-high 4.5 games over Sugar Land and 5.5 games over Lancaster with 10 contests to play in the first half, lowering their magic number to seven.
One night after breaking a 1-1 tie in the eighth, Witherspoon's heroics lifted York in a game that featured decidedly more offense.
The Revs trailed 2-0 in the first on Zach Wilson's two-run homer to left-center, but York responded in a big way.
Bryan Pounds led off the second with a home run just left of the batter's eye to get York on the board, and Jason Repko followed with a triple to right. Keith Castillo then rapped an RBI double off the left field fence to tie the score, and scored on a one-out single to right by new acquisition Kevin Rivers in his first at-bat with York. The Revs batted for the cycle as a team in the second inning, taking a 3-2 lead.
Southern Maryland tied it in the second on a two-out RBI double to right by D'Arby Myers, but once again the Revs answered with a haymaker.
York scored four times in the top of the third to build a 7-3 lead. Michael Rockett led off with a line drive double off the left field fence, extending his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games, tied for the Atlantic League's third-longest of the year. Joel Guzman then blasted a tape-measure two-run homer to deep left-center, his 10th of the year, putting the Revs ahead. Alfredo Marte followed with a single to center, and with one out Repko walked. Both scored as Castillo slashed another double, this time a two-run two-bagger down the right field line, ending the night of Crabs starter Scott Snodgress.
York starter James Simmons retired seven straight batters before Jon Dziomba reached on a triple that was lost in the twilight sky. Myers followed with a grounder off the first base bag for an RBI double, cutting the lead to 7-4.
The Revs recovered that run as Josh Wilson led off the sixth with a home run to left field, his fifth of the year, increasing the lead to 8-4. It was the only run scored against Southern Maryland's bullpen until the 11th inning, however.
Angel Sanchez lined a three-run homer to left in the bottom of the seventh, suddenly trimming York's lead to 8-7.
Myers led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple to left-center, just out of the reach of a diving Witherspoon for his fourth extra-base hit. Sanchez followed with his fourth RBI, a game-tying sac fly to center, knotting things at 8-8.
York closer Mike DeMark saw his team record single-season streak of 19 consecutive saves snapped, suffering his first blown save all year and allowing just his second earned run and first in a save situation. The Revs would rally two innings later, however.
York set the table with one out in the 11th as Salvador Paniagua and Wilson bled singles through the left side of the infield. Then with two outs, Witherspoon nailed the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center for the dramatic three-run homer, extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games to begin his Revs career. After a walk to Rockett, Guzman launched a towering RBI double to deep right-center, providing the insurance run.
Manny Corpas worked a quick bottom of the 11th to close it out.
Julio DePaula (1-0) also enjoyed a perfect inning in the 10th to earn the win, while Crabs reliever Orlando Santos (1-2) suffered the loss.
Guzman went 4-for-6 with three RBI, taking the league lead with 42 RBI on the season. His four-hit game tied a season-best for a Revs batter and was his second four-hit game of the season. Wilson went 3-for-5 with one of York's four home runs.
Myers went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a triple, two RBI, and two runs out of the ninth spot. His triple in the ninth was the only base runner allowed by the Revs from the eighth inning-on.
Notes: The York offense tied a season-high with four home runs for the fourth time, and first since May 21 (at New Britain). York leads the league with 67 home runs, 13 more than the next closest team (Sugar Land). York's 17 hits tied a season-high. The nine extra-base hits establish a new season-best. York ties a season-high at 10 games over .500 for the fourth time, and first since June 8. The Revs now own the best overall record in the league. York improves to 4-1 in extra innings, 2-0 vs. Southern Maryland. The Revs improve to 6-1 against the Blue Crabs this season and have won 15 of the last 18 meetings dating to last season. York righty Tony Pena (5-1, 3.69) faces Southern Maryland southpaw Brian Burres (4-4, 3.18) on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
