Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers were three outs away from a four-game lead in the Freedom Division on Monday evening but could not finish off the York Revolution.
York rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Barnstormers, 8-7, narrowing Lancaster's divisional lead, instead, to two and cutting Lancaster's War of the Roses advantage to 12-11.
Marcus Walden (2-4) walked Brandon Boggs on a full count pitch to open the ninth. Bryan Pounds grounded a single through the left side, and Andres Perez punched a single into right, loading the bases. Yeicok Calderon tied the game with a single into left, leaving the bases loaded with nobody out.
Walden nearly got the game to extra innings. The right-hander fanned Telvin Nash and got Luis DeLaCruz on a weak pop up to second baseman Luke Hughes. Mikey Reynolds hit a ground ball toward the hole on the right side, which skipped up and over Hughes' glove on a diving try, sending York to the win.
It was the game's fourth lead change.
The Revs built a 3-0 lead early off Lancaster starter Chad Beck. Eric Patterson doubled off the wall in the first inning to score Wilson Valdez from second. DeLaCruz lifted a sacrifice fly in the second, and Jose Constanza singled home an additional run.
Lancaster clawed back in the third with two unearned runs that followed Calderon's muff of a Hughes fly ball down the right field line. Zach Collier keyed the inning with an RBI double to the gap in right center.
The Barnstormers took over in the top of the fifth. Anderson Feliz singled home Hughes with a bouncer up the middle, tying the game at 3-3. After the Barnstormers loaded the bases, Kent Matthes produced a sacrifice fly to put Lancaster ahead, 4-3, and Charlie Cutler tacked on an RBI single for a two-run margin.
York recovered one run in the fifth on a bases loaded walk, and Valdez put the Revs on top for a second time with a two-run bloop hit to right in the sixth.
For a second time in the game, the Barnstormers bounced back. Matthes drilled a 3-2 pitcher from Ron Schreurs over the 37-foot wall in left to even the game at 6-6 in the seventh inning. A double to left center by Cutler and single down the left field line by Brian Cavazos-Galvez staked Lancaster to its second lead in the eighth.
Calderon finished the night 4-for-5 while Valdez and Patterson produced three hits apiece in York's 18-hit attack. Matthes drove in three runs for Lancaster, and Cutler picked up his first three-hit game of the season.
Edward Paredes (2-1) pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the win.
The two clubs battle again on Tuesday. Lancaster will send left-hander Bryan Morgado (3-5) to the hill against lefty Rommie Lewis (8-7). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Cavazos-Galvez tied Lew Ford for the league RBI lead at 58...The 18 hits by York matched the most against the Barnstormers in a game in 2015...Matthes has 11 RBI in his last 11 games...Beck replaced Shunsuke Watanabe in the rotation...Watanabe was placed on the inactive list with a shoulder ailment...The Barnstormers added outfielder Derrick Pyles to the roster and will add RHP Mark Lamm on Tuesday to fill in Beck's spot in the bullpen.
