Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers won for the fourth game in row, beating the Springfield Cardinals 6-4 on Friday night at Dickey-Stephens Park.
With Arkansas trailing 2-0 in the fifth, 2B Alex Yarbrough blasted a three-run home run to right-center field, his first of the season, to put the Travs up 3-2.
Arkansas added a run in the sixth on an SS Anthony Phillips RBI double to take a 4-2 lead, but Springfield battled back in the seventh.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the seventh, Cardinals DH Chris Jacobs rocketed a line drive over center fielder Bo Way's head for a two-run double to tie the game 4-4.
Arkansas countered in the bottom of the seventh. RF Cal Towey drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a DH Chad Hinshaw single. Towey then scored the go-ahead run on an 1B Eric Aguilera sacrifice fly, and the Travs added an insurance run on a C Jose Briceno RBI single, his first RBI with Arkansas.
Springfield threatened in the eighth. The Cards put runners on the corners with one out, but RHP Alan Busenitz struck out back-to-back batters to end the inning.
RHP DJ Johnson (S, 4) notched his fourth save of the year. After allowing a single to start the ninth, the righty struck out three Cardinals in a row to end the game.
RHP Austin Wood (W, 1-1) picked up the victory after retiring the final batter of the seventh.
Travs starter RHP Victor Alcantara took a no-decision but pitched really well. The righty worked his longest outing of the season (6.2IP) and allowed four runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Two of the four runs were scored in the seventh.
Aguilera finished 2-for-3 with a run and the RBI.
Phillips went 2-for-4 with the double, run and RBI.
Yarbrough extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games with the home run, the longest streak for a Travs player this season.
Arkansas finished 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
With the win, the Travs improved to 17-24 on the season. The two teams will play game two of the four-game series on Saturday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
