Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - J.D. Davis matched a club record with three home runs and the Hooks scored seven times in their last two trips to the plate, engineering an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over the Missions Thursday night at Wolff Stadium.
Corpus Christi (24-15) has won 10 in a row, equaling the team standard for consecutive victories, last achieved during the 2007 season. The Hooks are 15-3 in May.
With the Missions ahead 3-1 in the eighth, lefty Ramon Benjamin (0-2) replaced starter Michael Kelly. Teoscar Hernandez coaxed a lead-off walk and Alex Bregman followed with a home run to right field. Bregman, who belted three homers in the four-game series, is now tied for the Texas League lead with 10. Benjamin's next pitch plunked James Ramsay, setting the stage for Davis' second big fly of the night, a line shot to left field.
Later in the frame, Conrad Gregor worked a walk and advanced to third on a Trent Woodward double. Rodrigo Ayarza's first Double-A hit was an RBI single, staking Corpus Christi to a 6-3 advantage.
San Antonio (12-27) got a run back in the home half against Michael Freeman (3-1). Brendan McCurry ended the inning by striking out both batters he faced.
Ramsay's two-out walk in the ninth brought Davis to the plate. Elliot Morris lost the nine-pitch battle, which culminated with a deep drive sailing over the right-field fence for an 8-4 Hooks lead.
All of Davis' seven home runs have come in his last 12 games. Â
McCurry struck out two more in a scoreless ninth for his league-leading seventh save.
Keegan Yuhl made the start for the Hooks, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Corpus Christi opens a series in Midland Friday night. Kyle Smith (0-4, 4.71) draws RockHound right-hander Chris Jensen (2-4, 6.70). 7:00 first pitch.
