RICHMOND, VA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees beat the Richmond Braves 5-4 at The Diamond Saturday. The Yankees banged out 13 hits to take the opener of a four game series and end a three game Richmond winning streak.

Yunel Escobar sliced an RBI double in the first to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. The Yankees responded with a two-run Kevin Thompson double in the second to move in front to stay. Andy Phillips smashed a home run in the third to stretch the Yankees lead to 3-1. Bill McCarthy knocked in a run with a single in the fifth to pull the Braves to within one. The Yankees took a 4-2 lead in the sixth on two singles and a double play ground ball. Richmond took advantage of an error and an RBI ground out by T.J. Bohn to cut the Yankees lead to 4-3. Phillips doubled a big insurance run home in the ninth to make it 5-3. The Braves rallied in the home half. Wes Timmons singled a run home and the Braves had the winning run aboard before Jim Brower came on to end the threat.

Chase Wright pitched 7.2 innings to earn the win. Brower collected a save. Ryan Basner took the loss. Angel Chavez had four hits for the Yankees. Timmons had two for the Braves.

The Braves and Yankees clash Sunday at 2 PM at The Diamond. Jonathan Johnson will pitch for the Braves. The Yankees starter is undecided.
