Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(READING) - The New York Yankees announced that starter Domingo Germán will be making a Major League rehab start on Tuesday, June 28 for the Somerset Patriots. The visiting Patriots will face the Reading Fightin Phils (Phillies) at 7:00pm at FirstEnergy Stadium. Germán will face Reading starter Noah Skirrow.
Gates will open at 5:00pm.
Germán was placed on the 60-Day Injured List with a right shoulder impingement back on March 18, 2022.
This is an injury he has struggled with before. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said his rehab is going "according to plan" after Germán threw 40 pitches in three innings. The righty allowed just one hit.
Germán, 29, has four years of Major League experience under his belt. He made his big-league debut on June 11, 2017 and has pitched a part of 77 games for the New York Yankees. The right hander has mainly started (56 games) while in the majors, but has made a few appearances out of the bullpen. He has a career 4.54 ERA with 24 wins in 341.1 innings pitched. Germán has held batters to just a .233 average with 371 total strikeouts.
The current Yankees rotation has five starters so it is uncertain where he will fall when he returns healthy.
Germán was originally signed by the Miami Marlins on May 27, 2010 out of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic. After working his way through their system, the Marlins traded him to the Yankees in 2014.
Miami traded RHP Nathan Eovaldi, RF Garrett Jones and RHP Domingo German to New York for RHP David Phelps and 3B Martin Prado. Since then, Germán has been on and off the injured list numerous times, first getting Tommy John surgery in 2015. He elected free agency after the season, but the Yankees resigned him to a minor league contract less than two weeks later. Germán also had a stint on the restricted list because he was suspended 81-games under the league's domestic violence policy.
Somerset also boasts the Yankees number one prospect shortstop Anthony Volpe. The team carries five other top 30 prospects. Reading holds the Phillies number three prospect catcher Logan O'Hoppe. The home team also has six other top 30 prospects.
On Tuesday, June 28, Reading will also have a t-shirt giveaway for the first 2,000 adults that enter the ballpark.
The shirt will embody the Cheeseburger in Baseballtown theme for the night. Gates will open at 5:00 for a pregame Happy Hour. First pitch will be at 7:00pm.
