Y'alls Win First Two Games of Series Versus Québec
June 19, 2021 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - In an unusual series of events leading to Florence and Québec playing one and a half games on Saturday, the Y'alls won both contests to take the first two games of the weekend series. The final score of Friday's suspended game - which was finished Saturday afternoon - was 20-3, and Florence won the regularly-scheduled Saturday evening game by a score of 4-2 (seven innings).
Florence and Québec played four 1/3 innings Friday night before rain, lightning, and a tornado warning forced the pause and ultimately the suspension of the game until Saturday. At the time, Florence had a 10-2 lead and would tack on 10 more runs Saturday afternoon when the game resumed. Taylor Bryant hit two home runs on Friday to get the offense started, and he ended with three RBI overall. Trevor Craport and Jordan Brower also had three RBI apiece, and Harrison DiNicola had four of his own. All but one batter to appear in the game for the Y'alls had a base hit. Jared Cheek picked up the win on the mound for Florence after entering the game during the fifth inning on Saturday in replacement of Friday's starter Kevin Hahn.
Friday's game resumed at three o'clock on Saturday and the nightcap began around 6:30p. Florence (15-7) continued the torrid offensive pace from the earlier game by scoring three runs on three consecutive hits in the first inning off of Québec starter Pablo Arevalo. Luis Pintor singled, Chad Sedio doubled him home, and Craport hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Y'alls a quick 3-0 lead.
Équipe Québec (11-11) responded immediately thanks to a Ruben Castro two-run shot to right-center field in the second inning to pull within a run, but Bryant gave the Y'alls some breathing room in the home half with an RBI-double to get back to a 4-2 score. Québec made things interesting in the seventh and final inning with a Jonathan Lacroix RBI-single to make it a one-run ballgame, but Johnathon Tripp got the final out to put the finishing touches on a four-out save.
Edgar Martinez gets the win for Florence with the only blemish on his line being the Castro long ball. That was the only hit the right-hander allowed, though he did walk three batters. Martinez struck out six. Arevalo lasted just three innings for Québec. The righty allowed the four runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout. David Gauthier pitched the final three innings for Québec and did very well, holding Florence scoreless and allowing just one hit.
Both teams turn their attention to the series finale Sunday afternoon, June 20, for a Father's Day showdown. Frank Valentino gets the ball as Florence looks for the sweep. First pitch is at 3:01p ET, and gates at Y'alls Ballpark will open an hour before game time.
