Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners used an outstanding team pitching effort and a persistent offense to even up their weekend series against the Schaumburg Boomers with a 6-0 victory on Saturday night at Wintrust Field.

The Miners were able to get on the board with a two-out rally in the top of the second inning against Boomers starter Kyle Arjona (2-3), as Nolan Earley walked with two outs, and after a bunt single by Ryan Stacy, he scored on an RBI single by John Cable for a 1-0 Miners lead. In the third inning, Carson Bartels led off with a walk, and after a wild pitch, he came in to score on Yeltsin Gudiño's RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Miners would keep it up in the fourth, as Jared Mang worked a leadoff walk, and scored three batters later on Cable's RBI double for a 3-0 lead. Cable would also come up clutch for Southern Illinois in the sixth inning, as with Mang on first base and two outs, he parked his third RBI hit of the game, a double, into the right field corner for a 4-0 Miners advantage. Ethan Owens then followed with his first professional RBI on a single to right field, scoring Cable to make the score 5-0.

A Gudiño solo home run leading off the seventh inning capped the scoring for Southern Illinois, whose stout pitching held the Boomers off the board all night. Michael Austin opened with a pair of shutout frames and five strikeouts, and Stevie Ledesma (2-0) tossed five more out of the bullpen, earning the win in relief.

Ryan Miller and Joey Pulido would finish off the game by combining for five more strikeouts in the final two innings of the game as the Miners recorded their second shutout victory of the season, striking out 12 in the game while walking only one, and holding the Boomers' offense to just five total hits.

The Miners will face off in a rubber game against the Boomers on Sunday, June 20, at 1:00 p.m. to conclude the road trip, with Gunnar Kines scheduled to take the mound against his former team for Southern Illinois and Andrew Dean slated to oppose him for Schaumburg.
