Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE, KY - Runs were hard to come by at Y'alls Ballpark Friday night, but thanks to single runs in four different innings, Florence edged out a 4-2 victory over Joliet in the first game of a weekend series.

The Y'alls (32-19) have won their first four games against the Slammers in 2021 and have won two straight games. Joliet came into the game riding high after combining for a no-hitter against Schaumburg yesterday, but the loss drops the Slammers to 19-31.

Neither team scored more than an individual run in any of their at-bats today, and for a while the teams seesawed back-and-forth between leads and ties. The Y'alls scored in the first inning on an RBI-single by Trevor Craport, only for Joliet to tie in the top of the third on a RBI base hit for J.P. Fullerton. That represented the first professional hit and run batted in of the career for Fullerton.

The tie would not last long, for Chad Sedio gave the Y'alls a 2-1 advantage on an RBI-groundout in home half of the inning. Joliet again tied the game in the fifth inning when Florence starting pitcher, Johnathon Tripp, walked in a run with the RBI credited to Braxton Davidson. Tripp would force a ground ball to end the threat and limit the Joliet scoring.

The Y'alls took the lead for good in the sixth inning thanks to a Rodney Tennie RBI on a fielder's choice. Tennie added an insurance run with an RBI-single in the eighth inning to guide the Y'alls to the 4-2 win.

The Florence offense has been somewhat quiet over the past four games with just eight total runs in that span. The pitching tonight, however, backed up just enough offense. Tripp struck out eight batters in six innings with just the two earned runs allowed. He improves to 3-0 as a starter this season. Karl Craigie and Joe Dougherty combined for three scoreless innings and five strikeouts in relief. Dougherty gets the save, his seventh of the campaign.

Chandler Brierley takes the loss for Joliet after he allowed the decisive run to score in the sixth inning. Logan Lytle lasted three 2/3 innings in his first professional start and struck out four. Tyler Depreta-Johnson had a pair of hits for the Slammers.

The second game of the series is tomorrow, Saturday, July 24, at 6:36p ET. Edgar Martinez gets the ball for Florence. The gates at Y'alls Ballpark open an hour before first pitch.
