Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners could not get their bats going on Friday night against the Windy City ThunderBolts, as they were held to just three hits in a 4-0 loss at Rent One Park.
Windy City scored first in the first inning for the third straight game against the Miners, this time on a solo home run by Rob Calabrese off Trent Johnson for a 1-0 advantage. It would be the only base runner Johnson (0-4) would allow in the first three innings. But the ThunderBolts used leadoff doubles in the fourth and fifth to lead to insurance runs on their lead, scoring the runs on an error by Anthony Brocato in center field and an RBI single by Brynn Martinez, making the score 3-0 heading into the sixth.
Offensively, the Miners got a single from Nolan Earley in the bottom of the first inning, but would not manage another hit against Windy City starter Miguel Ausua (5-2), who pitched six innings and struck out seven in the game. Southern Illinois' most-serious threat to score came in the bottom of the sixth, when Craig Massey led off with a walk and Yeltsin Gudiño was hit by a pitch, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Ausua got three straight outs, including a strikeout, to keep the Miners off the board.
Windy City would add another insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Zac Taylor to complete the scoring as the Miners tied a season-low with three hits, two of which came from Earley, and were shut out for the fourth time this season.
The Miners will look to even the weekend series on Saturday, July 24, at 6:05 p.m., with Michael Austin getting the starting nod against Windy City right-hander Tyler Thornton.
