Sioux City, Iowa â The Sioux City Explorers (14-25) received a strong pitching performance from starter David Glick en route to a 8-3 victory over the T-Bones of Kansas City (15-24) Friday evening in front of 1,743 fans at Lewis and Clark Park. Glick went eight innings in the victory, scattering six hits while allowing three runs â two of which were earned â while striking out seven batters.
The Explorers jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first as Ryan Ruiz drew a leadoff walk before stealing second. Jason Sullivan reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error, plating Ruiz for the games first run.
First baseman Desi Wilson belted a double to left center, plating Sullivan and giving the X's a 2-0 advantage, before catcher Marcel Longmire followed Wilson's double with one of his own to extend the Sioux City lead to 3-0 after the first inning of play.
The Explorers added another run in the second before Kansas City plated a run in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 4-2. In the sixth, Sioux City opened the game up as Bobby Brown and Casey Baker each singled to open the stanza. Rookie third baseman Scott Beshears would plate both runners as he belted a home run over the right field fence giving the X's a 7-4 lead. Sioux City added their last run of the contest in the eighth frame.
Kansas City starter Phil Thompson went 5 1/3 innings to record his first loss of the season. He allowed seven runs on nine hits, while issuing three walks and striking out three Explorers.
The three-game series will continue tomorrow evening as the Explorers will send right-hander Chris Swiatkiewicz (2-3, 5.06 ERA) to the mound against KC right-hander Jonathan Krysa (3-6, 3.86 ERA). At the conclusion of the game there will be a fire works display to kick-off the 4th of July weekend.
