JackHammers seeing 20-20

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Schaumburg Flyers (26-14) defeated the Joliet JackHammers (20-20) 7-to-3 in front of 7,361 at Alexian Field on Saturday night. The JackHammers and Flyers have split the first two games of this three-game series setting up the rubber match to be played on Sunday evening. The JackHammers are 5-and-4 through nine games of this 10-game road trip.

Geoff McCallum (1-for-4) led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a single center field. The next batter, Eddie Romprey (1-for-4), was hit by a pitch. McCallum stole third base, his 8th swipe of the season. McCallum then came home on a fielder's choice grounder by Mario Delgado (1-for-4). It was his team leading 38th RBI of the season. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Eric Cole (1-for-3) led off with a single to center field. Chris Weekly (2-for-3) lined his 2nd triple of the season to the right field corner scoring Cole. Then, Justin Hendrickson (2-for-3) unloaded his 5th home run (21st/22nd RBI) of the season to left field for a 4-to-0 Flyers lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Delgado led off with an opposite field home run over the left-center field wall. It was his 9th home run and 39th RBI of the season. After Kirk Pierce (2-for-3) doubled and T.J. Staton (1-for-4) reached on an infield single, Cole connected for a sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored Pierce. The Flyers led 6-to-0. JackHammers starting RHP Steve Hecker (2-4) pitched just 2.2 innings, allowed eight hits, six runs (all earned), walked one, hit one batter and struck out none. He took the loss.

With two outs in the bottom of the 4th inning, Corey Paul (2-for-3) grounded his second hit of the game and his 7th double of the season down the right field line. He scored when the next batter, Rickie Morton (2-for-4), extended his hitting streak to six games with a RBI single to center field. It was his 12th RBI of the season. The JackHammers trailed 6-to-1.

After John Lackaff (1-for-4) reached on a one-out single, Josh Loggins (1-for-5) hit his team leading 11th home run and collected his 38th and 39th RBI of the season with a 2-run home run to left field. The JackHammers trailed 6-to-3. Flyers starting RHP Matt Bailie (3-2) pitched 6.2 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs (all earned), walked three and struck out four. He earned the win.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, Hendrickson led off with a double to the wall in left field. He later advanced to third base on a ground out and then came home on a wild pitch. The Flyers led 7-to-3. Flyers relief RHP Gabe DeHoyos pitched the final 1.2 innings for his 7th save of the season.

LOOSE GRAVEL: LF Corey Paul entered the game with a 10-game hitting streak, the longest of the season for the JackHammers. He extended that hitting streak to 11 games with a 2nd inning single. The streak is tied for the 4th longest in team history matching Steve Foley's streak from 2003.

The JackHammers end their 10-game road trip on Sunday evening with the final game of a three-game series versus the Flyers. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm. RHP Chris Spigner (0-1, 9.39) will start for the JackHammers, and LHP Anthony Boughner (6-1, 1.85) will start for the Flyers. The game will be heard live on 1340-AM WJOL and at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. The pre-game show will begin at 5:45 pm.

The JackHammers return home to Silver Cross Field on Monday, July 5 at 7:05 pm versus the Sioux City Explorers. Western Union presents Cinco de Julio, a Mexican celebration at Silver Cross Field. Monday is a Pepsi Kids Club Night and club members can redeem their ticket vouchers for Monday games only. Monday is also a McDonald's Monday, and that means you can purchase 2-for-1 Reserved or General Admission tickets at the Silver Cross Field ticket office when you present a McDonald's receipt.
