Xs fall 9-0 to Lincoln

SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers lost 9-0, to the Lincoln Saltdogs Friday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The loss drops the Xs to 32-31 (8-7 second half) and the win improves the Saltdogs to 37-25 (6-8 second half).

Lincoln got off to a quick start and never slowed down. The Saltdogs got runs in the top of the first from Bryan Warner and Josh Patton. Lincoln would add two more runs to their lead in the third. A Kevin Sullivan single to right would drive in both Warner and Patton again, giving the Saltdogs a 4-0 lead.

Lincoln added two more in the top half of each the fourth and fifth innings. Evan Tartaglia and Jay Yaconetti would score in the fourth, while Paul Powell and Yaconetti would score in the fifth.

The Xs were no-hit until the fifth, when Mike Richardson singled to left field. However, Sioux City wasn't able to muster another hit until the seventh when Ryan Gripp singled to left. Lincoln would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth, when Sullivan singled to drive in Bryan Warner, setting the final score at 9-0.

Lincoln starter Brian Rodaway threw a complete game, two-hitter for his sixth win of the year. Rodaway struck out eight and walked three. Rookie Nate Holguin took the mound for the Xs, went 3.1 innings and got his first loss of the season. Holguin (2-1) gave up 11 hits, six runs, and only struck out two.

The Xs and Saltdogs will play the rubber match of their three game series Saturday night at Lewis and Clark Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with Tom Lipari (6-4) starting for Sioux City and Lindsay Gulin (7-1) going for Lincoln.
