Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (8-6) extended their home winning streak to five games with a 6-5 win over the Shreveport Sports (6-9) on Friday night.

The Canaries took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Monegan led off with a walk and stole second base. After Monegan went to third on a wild pitch, Chad Hermansen walked to put runners on the corners. Abner Arroyo doubled off-the-wall to score both runners and give the Birds an early 2-0 lead over Shreveport.

The Canaries got another in the fourth. John Schmitz doubled with two outs and an error by Sports shortstop Enohel Polanco allowed Chris Hall to reach and keep the inning going. Angelo Fermin singled to score Schmitz and extend the Canaries lead to 3-0.

The long ball got the Sports back in the game in the sixth A two-run homer by Coby Smith, his second of the year, put the Sport6-s on the board in the sixth. Todd Self followed with a solo home run, his second of the season, to bring the teams to a short-lived 3-3 tie.

In the bottom of the sixth, Edgard Clemente singled, but had to leave the game with a hamstring injury. With Chris Weber pinch running Dennis Anderson singled to advance Weber to third. Weber then scored on a wild pitch, putting the Canaries up, 4-3.

The Sports tied it up again in the eighth. Neb Brown singled and advanced to second on a balk. A single by Todd Self moved Brown to third, and a Sacrifice fly by Chad Gambill scored Brown to tie the game, 4-4.

The Canaries went ahead to stay in the bottom of the eighth. For the second night in a row, Hall was the eighth inning hero. Weber and Anderson both singled to get on base and were advanced into scoring position on John Schmitz sacrifice bunt. Chris Hall singled to drive both runners in and give the Canaries a 6-4 lead. Hall has driven in a run in each of the Canaries last five home games.

The Sports were able to get one run in the ninth. Enohel Polanco tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly, but the Sports were not able to tally any additional runs, and the Canaries took their second consecutive victory over Shreveport, winning 6-5.

Matt Petrusek (1-2) picked up the win in relief, Aaron Cunningham (0-3) suffered the loss for Shreveport and Matt Montgomery picked up his second save with the Canaries this season.

The Canaries will host Shreveport Sports again tomorrow for the final game of their three-game series. Saturday night, Missouri River Energy will present fireworks following the game.
