Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City-----Wally Backman, Jr. singled home Brian Bistange with the winning run in the 10th inning as the Explorers defeated Sioux Falls 7-6 to sweep the three-game series from the Pheasants.
The base hit past the third base bag was Backman's only hit of the game, but it kept the playoff hopes alive for the Explorers. Sioux City had a 5-0 lead going into the ninth inning, but the Pheasants sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs to take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth Derek Schermerhorn had a one-out single, his third hit of the game and later scored on a two-out infield hit by Ray Serrano to send the game into extra innings. After Sioux Falls went down in order in the top of the tenth inning Bistange had a one-out single, stole second and went to third on the throw to second base and went off the glove of the Pheasants shortstop Joe Anthonsen. After Dustin Jones walked, Backman singled past the third base bag to give the Explorers the win.
With the victory, the Explorers remain three back of Wichita in the Central Division race and now just two games back in the wild card race with eight games to play.
After an off day Monday, the Explorers will open up a four-game series Tuesday at St. Paul. The Explorers will close out the regular season with a four-game series at Lewis and Clark Park with Lincoln starting on Saturday night.
