Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVENâThis Saturday, as the fight for their first playoff berth in their four years' existence continues, the Memphis Xplorers will spotlight the North Mississippi Sexual Assault Resource Center (NMSARC) during their game against the Macon Knights.
NMSARC organizers are aiding the fight for a different type of first-time breakthroughs, helping victims break through unhealthy situations to emotional and spiritual victory.
"Our mission emphasizes helping victims of sexual assault, but we want to help victims of all kinds get the physical and legal aid they need," NMSARC director Debbie Houck said.
The Center helps victims in many ways. For instance, NMSARC offers support groups for victims and for custodial parents of children that have been abused.
The Center will kick off their second annual "Gifts from the Heart" Christmas program this weekend. The program allows area residents to provide Christmas presents to less fortunate and hurting children. Last year the Center helped 223 children; this year they hope to help more than 500.
NMSARC also helps victims through the Teddy Bears Child Advocacy Center, which deals with forensic interviewing for children. The center is also working on building Angels Domestic Outreach Services, which will provide three to six months of living quarters for women or men who have been abused to help them get back on their feet.
"As the victim, you often don't know your rights," Houck said. "I just want to make sure victims in DeSoto County know their rights and know where to go from there. It's a service DeSoto County needs. Generally, you only get that information by paying a heavy price for it. Through our centers, you don't have to do that."
The Center is giving away a 7-day cruise for two people as a holiday fundraiser. With each $10 donation, individuals will receive one chance to win the trip. The winner will be drawn at NMSARC's Christmas party (open to the public) on Dec. 4.
Additionally, the Center is raising money by selling tickets to Saturday's game. Of every ticket the Center sells, $5 will go to help victims of abuse. For more information call Houck at 662-280-9111.
