THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 1-0 on Saturday evening at Savannah. The Sand Gnats plated the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth on two singles and a fielder's choice. Orlando Castro and Rainy Lara matched zeros otherwise and each recorded their team's longest outing by a pitcher this season. The Power had six hits in the game and put the tying run aboard in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not rally back to tie or take the lead. Castro took the loss while Lara earned the win. Bret Mitchell collected the final five outs for the save.
LIGHTENING QUICK: Saturday's defeat in Savannah was completed in one hour and 57 minutes and ranks as the fourth shortest nine inning game in West Virginia Power history. On September 3, 2012, Zack Von Rosenberg pitched a complete game in a 4-1 Power win over Delmarva in one hour and 52 minutes. West Virginia beat Kannapolis 3-1 at Appalachian Power Park on May 16, 2005, in a game that lasted one hour and 53 minutes. The third shortest game occurred on July 15, 2007, in Greensboro as the Power fell 5-2 to the Grasshoppers in one hour and 54 minutes.
GO FOR KUCHNO: John Kuchno will make his fifth start of the season this afternoon. The right-hander started the fourth game of the season at home, but the club has been on the road for the remainder of his starts. In 13 innings over three road starts, Kuchno has surrendered nine runs on 14 hits, though eight runs came on seven hits in his appearance on April 12 at Asheville. Kuchno has only allowed one run on seven hits in his last nine innings spanning two starts.
FREE RIDES: Power pitchers did not walk a batter on Saturday evening, but still remain tied for the second most issued in the league this season. West Virginia has hit a league-high 26 batters in 2013, including one last night. Since becoming a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in 2009, the Power have led the league in hit batters in each season except 2010. Power pitchers hit 124 batters in 2009, 88 in 2010 (third most), 103 in 2011, and 113 last year.
OVER/ UNDER: West Virginia has not won a game this season when scoring fewer than six runs. The Power are now 0-11 when scoring five or less in any games this season.
TIME TO SWAT: The Power lead the all-time series with the San Gnats 20-16, but have lost two straight in this series and now have an 8-9 record at Grayson Stadium since 2005. These teams will meet eight more times this season including six in the second half, three of which will be played in Charleston.
NO MISTAKES: West Virginia is now 4-2 in games when they don't commit an error. The club has also been charged with multiple errors in 13 games, going 4-9 in those contests.
ON-BASE MOROFF-TEN THAN NOT: Max Moroff singled in the eighth inning on Saturday to extend his on-base streak to 19 straight games. Only two players in the league have had longer streaks than the Power shortstop, with Delmarva's Christian Walker still riding an active 21 game streak. Moroff was last held off the bases on Opening Day (April 4 against Asheville).
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 18: The Power will host their annual WVU night on May 18 against Lexington. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Geno Smith bobblehead. All fans will have the chance to meet and greet Kevin Jones, Truck Bryant, and Da'Sean Butler. WVU Night is present by the WV Army National Guard.
