Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hagerstown, MD - On a cold, rainy day in Hagerstown Maryland the Hickory Crawdads bats decided to take the afternoon off, as the 'Dads were shutout for just the second time this season in a 3-0 loss to the Suns at Municipal Stadium.
Battling rain from the first pitch, the Crawdads were only able to muster five hits and struck out a season-high 18 times off Suns' hurlers Ivan Pineyro and David Fischer. Pineyro was the main aggressor, tossing 6 shutout innings and allowing just three hits and two walks while fanning 12. Fischer followed in the seventh and got strikeouts on six of his nine outs recorded. Pineyro (1-2) earned the win for his efforts while Fischer (2) picked up the save.
The Suns batters didn't fare much better, but were able to muster three runs on seven hits. The 'Dads defense didn't help matters for the second straight game either, as the club committed three more errors and allowed another unearned run. Hickory now has a total of 9 errors in their three games in Hagerstown.
Sam Stafford was scheduled to start the game for Hickory, but was a late, precautionary scratch. That moved Ryan Bores (0-1) to the mound to make just his second appearance of the season for the Crawdads. The right-hander fared much better than his rough welcome in Greensboro five days ago, but he was still saddled with the loss after allowing one run on four hits over his four innings pitched.
Seldom used second baseman Luis Mendez was the only Crawdad to have a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a double. The 'Dads actually had three doubles on the afternoon, but ended the day with seven men left on base, five of them in scoring position.
The Crawdads (14-10) have now lost back-to-back games against the Suns (13-11) and sit only a game ahead of them for first place in the North Division. The two clubs will wrap up their four-game series Monday morning, with first pitch scheduled for 10:35 am.
